Federal Medical and Dental College Islamabad is one of the pioneers of medical sciences education in the federal territory of Pakistan. FMDC was inaugurated in Musharraf regime in 2001; it is still getting bigger and better by then. Federal Medical and Dental College Islamabad now has its building with several blocks, libraries, and lecture theaters. The college campus lies in between the beautiful low-lying margalla hills away from the busy Capital; it has hostels, canteens, book shops, and everything needed for students inside the campus. The campus is now upgraded, more land has been allotted with a grant to expand the institute and the number of students.

The first batch of MBBS and BDS studies at Federal Medical and Dental College consisted of 50 students. As approved by PMDC, the MBBS and BDS criteria and admissions are held in respective dates as given by Pakistan Medical and Dental Council and Federal Ministry of Health and Education. Till 2016, six batches have been admitted for both Medical and Dental Sciences departments.

Federal Medical and Dental College Admission Dates:

The admissions are held after all the provincial and federal Board for Higher secondary education announce their respective results. After the result announcements, the admission dates are opened from August 31 to September 14 every year. The admissions are held every year as per the guidelines of PM&DC. As a public and government-run Institute, the Federal Medical and Dental College Islamabad provides admissions o merit as well as on quota basis.

There is a specific quota for all the provinces of Pakistan; Punjab has the most number of Quota seats. Gilgit Baltistan, FATA, FANA, and Azad Kashmir students are also added to the quota. For the international students, there are around 3 to 4 seats, the Muslim countries and dual nationals with a Pakistan nationality are preferred among international students.

FMDC Entry Test:

As a federal institute, FMDC holds NTS tests as most of the national and military colleges and universities hold for its admissions. The NTS test consists of general aptitude, physics, chemistry, logical reasoning, and biology subject. English is mandatory for sitting in NTS test. The entrance tests for Federal Medical and Dental College are held in mid-October. The results are commonly announced within a week after the entry test. The students have to submit a fee challan of Rs. 550 in the care of NTS Islamabad through UBL, HBL, and Allied Bank branches. The commencement of MBBS and BDS classes start from November or early December. The entrance tests are held in every provincial capital, and metropolitan cities as well as in Gilgit, Muzaffarabad, Hyderabad, and Sukkur. Eligibility Criteria:

The eligibility requirements for open merit is 60% is HSSC or equivalent exams with biology, chemistry, and physics as mandatory subjects. The students of all the provinces are eligible to apply for open merit seats, the competition for an open merit is toughest as only 150 seats are open for MBBS and around 100 for BDS courses. For international students, at least 550 marks in equivalent SAT is compulsory as the basic eligibility criteria. The open merit may vary every year with the number of students and the marks obtained in entrance tests.

Affiliated Hospitals:

So far, there are two major affiliates of Federal Medical and Dental College Islamabad. The primary affiliate is Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University Islamabad. The affiliated hospital is Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences ( PIMS ) Islamabad. One more hospital is added for the clinical practices of the FMDC students and to decrease the load on PIMS, a 200-bed Federal General Hospital; now NIH is a primary teaching hospital of FMDC Islamabad. The degree awarding institute of Federal Medical and Dental College is Quaid e Azam University Islamabad.

Federal Medical and Dental College Merit List:

The weighting of marks for the final merit list is given below:

10 percent marks in SSC or equivalent

40 percent in HSSC Pre-medical or equivalent

50 percent NTS entry test

The final merit list will be displayed in November considering those students appeared for interview and have submitted all the verified documents with the fee for first year and admission fee.

Federal Medical and Dental College Fee Structure:

The government subsidizes the fee structure of Federal Medical and Dental College. Therefore the merit criteria are sky-high, and most candidates prefer to get admission in public colleges. The one-time admission fee is Rs. 24000 for the first year. The hostel facility is exclusive to female students, the hostel fee per year is Rs. 36000 per year. All the different deposits sum up to Rs. 52000 for the first year and 40,000 from the second year of admission.

Departments:

There are two main departments of FMDC Islamabad, the basic sciences department, and the clinical sciences department. The basic sciences department is subdivided into departments of Anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, community and public health sciences, and the departments of forensic medicine.

The clinical sciences department has advanced sciences labs, practical dissection halls, a library fully equipped with the medicinal books of all the departments, theater classrooms, auditoriums, sophisticated labs with top-notch machinery. It satisfies all the necessary conditions of Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. The medicine and surgical sciences, pediatric department, ENT and Radiology departments comprise of fully equipped labs, best faculty, and internationally recognized doctors and surgeons as professors.

Extra-Curricular Activities:

Federal Medical and Dental College Islamabad has its arts and medical societies, girls &boys hostels, the art organizations and musical clubs for enthusiastic students. The English and Urdu literary societies conduct seminars and meetings and contribute in the annual diary of FMDC Islamabad. The college cafeteria is more like a food street in the campus, from chips and samosa to pizza and Chinese food, all is there in a college mess. The annual examinations are held every year in December.
